Frederick is obsessed with Miranda. He is repressed, introverted & unloved; A collector of butterflies & a photographer. She is a beautiful, privileged art student. When Frederick wins the lottery he buys a remote farmhouse & abducts Miranda. Having imprisoned her in his cellar he discovers that reality is far from his fantasy. A superb psychological thriller that is by turns sad, tense and horrific.
What makes the fate of Miranda and all she represents so chilling is not what happens to her, but what does not.

It perhaps takes a threat to one's liberty to fully appreciate what freedom means
